DR. JONATHAN BAGLEY

Dr. Jonathan Bagley was raised in Calgary, the eldest of six children. He attended the University of Calgary in a three year honors Zoology Program, then graduated from Dentistry with distinction in 1991 from University of Alberta. His passion for education has not stopped, as he continues to enroll in advanced dental studies and programs. He moved to Banff, Alberta after graduating in 1991 where he worked and owned his Banff Dental Care practice until September 2010, almost 20 years! In 2007, Dr. Bagley became the owner of his second practice in Canmore with Dr. Lloyd Evans, Canmore Downtown Dental.

Dr. Bagley now practices solely in Canmore and is happy to be close to home and his kids. He married his wife, Sheila, in 1999 and they have two active children, Benjamin and Sarah that kept them busy. Over the years, Dr. Bagley and his wife, Sheila have volunteered in many community programs with their children such as being leaders in Girl Guides & Scouting, helping with Jackrabbits Cross Country Ski Club, coaching youth soccer, leading youth mountain biking groups, volunteering on the board for Gymnastics and helping out in various school volunteer roles. Over the years, Dr. Bagley has thrived off living in the mountains and enjoyed many outdoor activities like x-country and downhill skiing, ski touring, rock and ice climbing, back country camping and hiking, mountain biking, golfing and sea kayaking. Now with busy children, you are more likely to find him at the recreation centre or in hockey rinks and golf courses around Alberta with his family. Dr. Bagley started to play piano before he discovered reading at the age of four and continues to play when he gets the chance, or help teach his children how to play. Dr. Bagley looks forward to practicing in his beautifully modern, state-of-the-art clinic on Main Street Canmore for many years to come, where he calls this great Bow Valley community “home”!

CELEBRATING 12 YEARS OF DENTAL MISSIONS

Attempting to pack a dental clinic into three hockey bags is no easy feat, but each year that is how our Dental Mission begins! The 2019 Mission trip will be Dr. Evans's twelfth time travelling to the Northern highlands of Guatemala with various staff members to provide care for locals in need of dental care.

Missions of the practice in Guatemala

We never know exactly what to expect, but spending each day with the Mayan families is a Gift! The first day of the clinic is always greeted by a long line of eager faces; some arriving as early as 4:00 AM and having walked several miles to get to us. The room that holds our makeshift dental set-up is hot, dusty, has no running water, and has a floor lamp to provide some lighting. It is a challenging space to work in, but we manage to treat hundreds of kids and adults each year. One look at the people waiting and we know we will be pushing ourselves to see everyone waiting, unfortunately the line never seems to end, and at the end of each week we would pull ourselves away feeling that our work was incomplete. This is what motivates us to keep heading back each year; without the intervention of volunteers, the people are all but forgotten. We shared laughs, tears, and also the occasional soccer game against the local children.

Missions of the practice in Guatemala

The villagers show their gratitude by offering us homemade meals, snacks, candy, or handpicked fruit. Even though they could likely not afford to give away so much, they are insistent on sharing what little they have. The best gratitude is shown with a heartfelt hug from many of the patients we treat! Several of the village children show up, eager to help us in any way they can.

The first year that we went on this trip, we were expecting to help people much less fortunate than ourselves. We left with a new understanding and renewed appreciation of what it is that makes a person “fortunate”. What the Mayan people may lack in material possessions they certainly make up for in spirit, community, and family values. The experiences shared among the volunteers are a dynamic, life-changing kind, and we would not hesitate to do the whole thing over again and again!

We want to thank the Bow Valley Community for showing their generosity and support of our endeavours over the years! Without donations from local businesses, community members and our dental supply companies, we would not be able to do trip each year.

LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS SPONSORSHIP

Canmore Downtown Dental has been a proud sponsor of local sports teams and organizations over the year. We are proud to be one of the many corporate sponsors for our AJHL Canmore Eagles Team. Dr Bagley was asked in recent years if he would be the Team's Dentist. We offer complimentary Sports Guards to the players to help protect their smile and are available for any emergency dental needs they have during games as well as basic dental care needed over the course of their year playing in Canmore. We have also enjoyed being a corporate sponsor for the Canmore Illusion Gymnastics Club. Dr. Bagley has enjoyed watching his daughter Sarah grow as an athlete in this club and he and his wife are happy to help the club meet goals with the help of sponsorships and volunteering time. Dr. Bagley has sponsored adult basketball teams in the past too, and had fun watching some of the games.

Incredibly Impressed of the Service

“Canmore Downtown Dental went absolutely above and beyond for me. I was visiting from BC for a wedding. At the same time, I also managed to require some emergency dental work. I was in a lot of pain! Their office got me in right away, were kind, took care of the issue and the doctor gave me her cell in case anything got worse over the weekend! So incredibly impressed of the service I received as a non-patient. Thank you.”
